Advanced NuStart Promotes Rumen Development
Advanced NuStart calf nut is proven to increase growth rates in calves, encourage early rumen development, increase dry feed intakes and support the calf’s immune system. Advanced NuStart is a starter feed. A starter feed in a calf's diet provides the following functions:-
1. It promotes rumen development
Developing the rumen of newborn calves is critical to introducing efficient and economic producers into your herd. The developing rumen will serve as a fermentation chamber for forages and is the largest part of the stomach at maturity.
Starch is the main factor in rumen development, stimulating rumen papillae growth. Advanced NuStart calf nut has high levels of quality starch and contains specific fibres which are fermented to butyrate.
2. Energy and protein intakes for growth
We know we can meet energy and protein requirements with milk, however to encourage starter feed intakes we provide just under these requirements with milk so that calves look for starter feed. Advanced NuStart is high in protein (from quality sources for digestibility), to encourage frame growth.
3. Prepares calves for weaning
A calf must be eating sufficient starter feed before it is weaned so that it can continue to grow once milk is removed.
Dry feed intake
In order to reach adult maturity of the rumen, dry feed intake is recommended to start alongside milk replacers at 3 days old. Rumen development will occur quickly as long as bacteria in the rumen are well established. Development is measured by the growth of rumen papillae - finger like projections attached to the wall of the rumen. These papillae provide the absorptive surface for the rumen and transport nutritients to the bloodstream. In order to maximise live weight gain, the calf should be offered a high quality, highly digestible starter feed. The formulation is made up from quality ingredients to provide 21% crude protein while having a high starch content to drive rumen development. I would also continue to feed the same starter nut for 2 weeks after weaning before transitioning onto the next ration. This will reduce stresses at weaning and allow for continued growth.
Proven results
Across 18 research and field trial studies NuStart inclusion in starter feed increases solid feed intake by 11% resulting in an increased calf growth by 12%. Overall, feed efficiency was increased by 6% showing that calves on NuStart use the nutrients from feed more for growth.
